As someone who has personally witnessed the impact that obesity has on the health of our citizens and our state’s economy, I urge you to support final passage of Senate Bill (SB) 1007, which is being championed by Senators Eric Berthel (R-32) and Saud Anwar (D-3) and Representatives Bobby G. Gibson (D-15) and Tom Delnicki (R-14). This legislation calls for the State Medicaid program and private health insurance plans in Connecticut to provide robust coverage for metabolic and bariatric surgery and FDA-approved obesity drugs. Throughout the past decades, the prevalence of obesity has skyrocketed across our country – with now nearly 30 percent of Connecticut citizens affected by obesity. Despite this fact, many policymakers continue to view obesity as a lifestyle choice or personal failing. These perceptions and attitudes have allowed health insurance plans to take vastly different approaches in determining treatment coverage. As a result, millions of Americans lack access to health benefit plans that provide coverage for comprehensive obesity care. Obesity is a chronic disease that needs to be treated seriously -- just like any other such as diabetes or heart disease. Sadly, this lack of treatment has resulted in countless Americans losing their lives this past year in the pandemic. In fact, many studies show that having overweight or obesity puts you at a higher risk for getting really sick, or even dying from COVID. In a country where we now have real treatment options for obesity, such as bariatric surgery and FDA-approved obesity drugs, it’s unacceptable that so many in our state are virtually left on their own to control their obesity. Please support final passage of SB 1007 and stand up for coverage of all medically necessary obesity treatment avenues – including bariatric surgery and FDA-approved anti-obesity medications.
